On this episode I speak with Austin Guyette, Foster MBA 2019. Austin is an investor with Voyager Capital, a Seattle based venture capital firm. We talk about his career journey and how he successfully landed his dream job in venture capital. Austin shared some valuable insights about the Seattle startup and venture ecosystem, and even one his biggest regrets from his time at Foster.
Some of the most important advice Austin shared during our conversation is that if you are an MBA student with a non-traditional career goal, it is important to stay focused on that goal, but also know how long your runway is. Austin used the resources of the Foster MBA Career Management team to hone his story and story-telling skill. He also used some of the professional development and career programing as a way to test his commitment to his plan — to discern what he wanted and what he definitely did not want.
Austin shared some great resources for people interested in venture and startups during our conversation:
- Acquired (podcast)
- Invest Like the Best (podcast)
- High Growth Handbook by Elad Gil
- Venture Deals by brad Feld and Jason Mendelson
- Zero to On: Notes on Startups or How To Build The Future by Peter Thiel
- The Messy Middle by Scott Belsky
